I wonder if it will translate animations I have already made in Maya? Honestly I feel that the weighting process in Maya could be improved upon a lot. Very few books touch base on the subject other than a basic set of instructions. Weighting a mesh correctly is perhaps the most important part of animation other than the actual rigging itself!

Does Maya not have some form of 'Bone Heat' auto weighting system?

A quick google threw this up, if there's still nothing in vanilla Maya.

I'm not aware of any Auto weighting system but I'm sure its possible with Mel scripting. It really does leave much to desire the weighting system in Maya as I often have started over up to several times because something goes wrong.

Weighting is an absolute nightmare on complex models. I'm a perfectionist those if my model distorts at all I may lose sleep over it. :D

Auto weighting will not look good on meshes with complex joints...
With humanoid meshes, that's the shoulders and the hips.

Who considers the clavicles ?
